1800 Currency

November 5th, 2015 by Piper Smith

Currency like this was used not only by the crew of the Isaac Allerton, but also by Asa Tift and his fellow key westers. In 1854, the navy establishes the average rate of pay for a sailor at $14.00 a month, while a common laborer elsewhere in the US often made less than 25 cents a day. “Lumpers” at the Tift Warehouse were paid $1.00 a day and his divers could sometimes make up to ten times that amount– firmly establishing Key West as the richest city per capita in the entire US by 1856.
