Capt. Phillip Philpot

Men who were injured or lost a limb while attempting to salvage a ship wrecked on the Florida Reef often were hired to serve as “lumpers” or lookouts in one of the numerous warehouses that dotted the NW shoreline of Key West. The fictional “mate” is typical of many men who found safer employment in Tift’s Warehouse. “Squire” Egan was actually Captain J. Egan, owner and master of the sloop Brilliant out of Groton, Connecticut, and a wrecker by trade both weekdays and Sunday.
