How Old Are Pirates?

October 7th, 2013 by Piper Smith

Acts of piracy can be traced to ancient times–ever since our oceanic waterways have been used for commerce. The earliest documented instances of piracy are the exploits of the sea-going peoples who threatened the Aegean and Mediterranean in the 14th century. Many ancient peoples engaged in what we call piracy–the Illyrians, the Greeks, the Tyrrhenians, and even the Romans. These people would loot, pillage, and would even kidnap children to sell as slaves.
