The Wreck of San Jose

The San Jose was a ship of the 1733 Spanish Galleon Fleet that was wrecked by a hurricane as it sailed up the Florida Coast off of what we now call Marathon. This Spanish Galleon was carrying nearly 7 million pesos worth of gold when it sank. It was salvaged by 18th century wreckers and modern day salvagers still visit the sunken ship in search of treasure. It’s ballast pile is in 35 feet of water and largely covered by sand, but this doesn’t stop present-day treasure hunters from diving to the wreck!
